What it is
Manna was started in Chennai in 2000 by I.S.A.K. Nazar. Its first product was a health mix based on sathumaavu, the traditional Tamil multigrain porridge mix.
Cholam is whole jowar, the pale round sorghum grain. It is mild and slightly sweet, with a chewy bite when cooked like rice, and it can be ground at home for bhakri and roti. It takes longer to cook than most millets, so plan ahead. Choosing a millet? Jowar for a mild, chewy grain; bajra (kambu) for a stronger, earthier taste; kodo (varagu) for a smaller, quicker-cooking grain.
Tip: Soak it the night before. Whole jowar is hard, and a long soak saves a lot of whistles.
Goes well with: Manna Jowar Millet Flour, Heera Toor Dal Plain, 777 Lime Pickle
