What it is

Thamarai thandu thiri are lamp wicks made from the fine fibres drawn out of the lotus stem. In many Tamil homes they are kept aside for Fridays and festival days, while plain cotton wicks do the everyday work.

Set in the lamp like a cotton wick, they draw up gingelly or lamp oil and hold a small flame. A single lamp usually takes one or two. Choosing between wicks?
