What it is
Anil was founded in 1984 and started out making roasted vermicelli, so semiya is where the brand began. This one is made with ragi, wheat and refined wheat flour, which gives the strands a brown colour.
It cooks in a few minutes and stays in separate strands, with the mild, earthy taste of ragi. Make it savoury with mustard, onion and curry leaves, or sweet with jaggery and coconut. Choosing between semiya? Anil roasted vermicelli for classic payasam; ragi for brown, earthier upma; Manna rice sevai for idiyappam-style lemon sevai.
Tip: Squeeze half a lime over ragi semiya upma just before serving. It brightens the earthy taste.
Goes well with: Heera Black Mustard Seeds, Heera Curry Leaves, 777 Lime Pickle
